want2race are delighted to announce Bond To as their 2016 competition winner. Bond, 28, from London, is the fourth Ginetta prize winner in as many years, following in Phil Ingram’s footsteps from 2015 and bagging the fully funded season in GRDC throughout 2017.
Almost Ninety finalists battled on track at Blyton Park in October, with only the best twenty going through to this year’s Grand Final, getting to show their stuff in front of head judge Paul O’Neill and want2race instructors David Pittard, Tom Oliphant and Max Coates.
All drivers had two sessions out on track in their heat day, with VR Ginetta racing on Project Cars between sessions along with the race ‘Maxterclass’ with W2R instructor Max Coates. The Grand Final gave the drivers more track time in the G40 race cars, along with a media interview with Ginetta and last year’s winner Phil Ingram.
After lunch there were just Twelve finalists remaining, with them participating in a nail biting Head2Head shootout around the 1.2mile Blyton Park Eastern Circuit, alongside Paul and David in greasy and challenging conditions.
Bond won after returning to the competition for a third year in a row, he said; “Amazing! I never imagined I would win want2race 2016 as the competition was very tough throughout both days of the finals. All the other competitors were really friendly despite us all wanting to win. Although I have to say, the wait for the final announcement was truly nerve wracking!
The instructors were professional and awesome, I learnt a lot from them and will continue to develop my skills. Winning the competition not only means a fully funded season of racing in 2017 but a once in a lifetime experience that I will not forget. A big thank you to the instructors and all the staff at want2race & Ginetta – I cannot wait to get out on the GRDC grid next season.”
Want2race organiser Ben Hyland reflected on the fourth year of running the competition; “It just gets better and better, with a fabulous mixture of new drivers to want2race and drivers back for a fourth year in some cases learning more and enjoying the experience. The atmosphere is friendly and fun, but as we get to the Head2Head shootout we all get extremely nervous as we watch the guys out on track.
Bond was a truly deserved winner, against extremely tough opposition, and we all look forward to working with Bond next season and watch him develop as a racing driver and become the new ambassador for want2race.
A big thanks from me to all our drivers, instructors, mechanics and admin staff who make this all possible, along with our partner venues and Ginetta themselves.”
Bond’s prize includes a fully funded season in the 2017 Ginetta Racing Drivers Club, with car, entries, ARDS test, race wear and equipment plus two pre-season track days and full driver tuition and technical support.
want2race thank all participants in this year's competition and we would love to hear your feedback on how we can improve the competition and experience even more. Please email us with any comments.
Finalist feedback will be available in the coming weeks once it has been collated and recorded onto digital format. We will email drivers when this becomes available.
Details of the 2017 competition will be launched soon on the W2R website and social media.
