W2R Motorsport are delighted to welcome former British GT Championship contender Declan Jones to the team for his Ginetta GT5 Challenge debut this weekend at Knockhill (25/26 August).
Jones will compete with W2R for the first time as he replaces Brett Ward for this weekend’s action in support of the Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship, joining Adrian Campbell-Smith and Will Dyrdal in the Yorkshire squad’s entry.
The Liverpool racer, who competes with support from Whitley Neill Gin, is no stranger to competing on the BTCC support package, having cut his teeth in the Ginetta Junior Championship in 2011, before stepping up to the Michelin Ginetta GT4 Supercup the following season.
Following two campaigns in British GT, during which he narrowly missed out on winning the 2013 GT4 title by just two points, Jones made a return to the Ginetta GT4 Supercup last season and took two race wins en-route to fourth in the points.
The 23 year old joins the team as Ward’s season comes to a close. In his maiden car-racing campaign, the former World Karting champion superbly qualified in the top five on two occasions and picked up three top ten race results.
W2R Motorsport’s Ben Hyland: “We’re really excited about welcoming Declan [Jones] to the team this weekend alongside Adrian Campbell-Smith and Will Dyrdal. It’s a line-up we feel can enjoy some great success at Knockhill across both Pro and Am categories.
“Declan has lots of racing experience under his belt, especially in one-make Ginetta competition, which means we’re confident that he’ll be able to find his feet quickly in this championship.
“We’re under no illusions as to how competitive it is at the front of the GT5 Challenge field, the leading drivers have been extremely fast all season, but we believe Declan can get himself into the mix and enjoy a positive weekend along with Will and Adrian.
“Brett [Ward] meanwhile showed some great progress through his first season. His qualifying pace in the last couple of meetings has been particularly impressive and some bad luck prevented him getting the standout race result he deserved. We wish him all the best for the future.”
Declan Jones: “I can’t wait to race in the GT5 Challenge this weekend. I’m really pleased Ben approached me with this opportunity and hopefully I can repay them with a top weekend. I know the all team very well and I’m confident we have a good car underneath us.
“Whenever I go racing I want to win, but I know the championship is hugely competitive and I don’t expect to just jump in and be at the front from the off. We will be working hard over practice and qualifying, and hopefully we can work our way to the podium.
“A huge thank you to Whitley Neill Gin for coming on-board this weekend and making this possible. We enjoyed a successful season together last year in the Supercup and it’s great to be working with them once again.”
The Knockhill meeting will kick off with two official pre-event test sessions tomorrow (24th August), with qualifying and the opening race following on Saturday. The final encounter on Sunday will be televised live on ITV4 at 12.30 in front of what is sure to be a huge crowd in Scotland.
