2015 want2race competition winner Phil Ingram made his motor racing debut this weekend at Rockingham, as part of his prize winning Ginetta Racing Drivers Club season.
Phil started the weekend perfectly, posting the fastest lap in qualifying – putting the W2R car on pole for Race 1 - with over 20 cars on the grid that was some achievement. Building on that in some fashion, Ingram raced hard with team-mate Oliphant throughout the weekend but was overall victorious in both races, also posting the fastest lap in both races – maximizing Championship points from his first two rounds.
Phil was understandably ecstatic with his debut performance, and described his Rockingham race experience: “What a brilliant weekend and my first ever as a bona fide racing driver. It was great to meet all the GRDC drivers for the first time in the friendly Ginetta village and engage in some nervous banter. Lots to take in on the organisational side with briefings to attend, scrutineering, rules and timetables to keep track of.
The results couldn't have been better, Q1, 1st in Race 1, 1st in Race 2 and fastest lap in both races. It certainly wasn't straightforward though! Qualifying was about getting a clear lap, which I didn't, but then neither did anyone else so it felt like a race in a way cutting through traffic. The car felt good, although I was a bit messy. We ended up 0.5s clear of second and pretty happy going into Race 1. Race 1 was a battle after making a poor start, plus a safety car to interupt the flow. Some good battles with Oliphant and Tetlow on the way to my first victory!!
Race 2 I got an average start rather than a bad one. Had a rather large dab of oppo at turn 2, but then the car came on and I was able to pull a few seconds gap, which I then managed to the end. Great support all through the weekend both at the track and on social media, which really helped calm the nerves. Silverstone in 6 weeks - cannot wait!”
Ben Hyland, want2race organiser and mentor for Phil was proud watching Phil’s first weekend, he commented: “Truly awesome debut for Phil, driving the wheels off the car and racing well against some tough opposition. The weekend was the perfect start to his competition winning season with us and I cannot praise him and his performance enough.”
Team want2race drivers all had successful results across the GRDC grid, with a podium for Jack Oliphant, top four for Isherwood, top 10 for Trumper and a special mention to Keith Gibson who turned up and drive his brand new car for the very first time on Friday practice, finishing a very respectable P11 in Race 2.
