W2R Motorsport enjoyed a perfect weekend in the Ginetta Racing Drivers Club at Silverstone this past weekend (08/09 June) as Michael Kidson secured the first two wins of his car-racing career in dominant fashion.
The latest winner of the want2race scholarship, Kidson was the star of the show throughout the second meeting of the season. His superb performance started in qualifying as he shined in tricky conditions to take a double pole position by a remarkable margin of 1.7 seconds.
The Surrey racer carried that pace across to the opening race on Saturday afternoon and controlled proceedings from start-to-finish. Building a healthy lead on lap one, he produced some blistering lap times to pull ten seconds clear of the pack at one stage.
From there, a mature and composed drive to the chequered flag earnt him a maiden win, which he doubled up with another supreme drive in race two. Successfully negotiating a lengthy safety car period, Kidson pulled clear for a comfortable victory to complete a dream weekend.
Fresh from a positive start to the season last time out at Snetterton, Chris White continued his progression in the series across the weekend. A positive start in qualifying saw him adapt well to the damp circuit to secure fifth and sixth on the grid for the two races.
Early drama in race one saw him fall back to 12th place, but the Guildford-based racer fought back with a superb recovery drive to seventh. Another competitive performance in race two saw him battle his way to sixth for his third top six finish in the first four races of the season.
A new addition to the team’s line-up for the weekend was Ignazio Zanon. The Italian student made substantial strides forward over the course of the meeting and converted 12th on the grid for both races into ninth place finishes for his first top ten results of the campaign.
Max Coates – W2R Motorsport Team Manager: “We couldn’t be happier to celebrate a double victory with Michael. He was recovering from a shoulder injury over pre-season and Snetterton was probably a bit early for him, so this weekend he was truly able to show what he can do.
“His performance in qualifying was exceptional and in the races he belied his experience with his maturity and composed performances. Focusing on breaking the tow and then building a gap, he controlled both races and completed a near perfect weekend!
“Chris showed once again that he has the pace to be challenging for the podium finish, but unfortunately it wasn’t quite his weekend. He showed great speed and racecraft though and as he learns more each weekend he’s getting closer to the silverware.
“It was great to work with Ignazio for the first time this weekend. He came on leaps and bounds with us and he improved his lap times every time he went out on track. A pair of top ten finishes on his first outing with us was good and we’re confident he can make move up the order next time out.”
The halfway mark has now been reached for the 2019 Ginetta Racing Drivers Club season. The next rounds come at Donington Park in Leicestershire (22/23 June), with the season finale following at Brands Hatch in Kent (03/04 August).
