Paul and Jack Oliphant are set to return to the Ginetta grid in 2017, as both father and son sign up for a season in the GRDC+ as part of the want2race team.
Paul Oliphant joined the Ginetta Racing Drivers Club in 2015, picking up a top five result on his debut season of competition. Graduating into GRDC+ for 2016, he finished the championship in 11th place and enjoyed some excellent close racing with his class rivals.
Jack meanwhile joined the Ginetta Racing Drivers Club in 2016 and picked up two podium results in his first year, along with a further two top five finishes.
With the pair sharing the same grid, competition for bragging rights around the Oliphant dinner table is set to be at an all-time high after Tom Oliphant - Jack’s older brother – picked up the Michelin Ginetta GT4 SuperCup championship title in 2015.
Jack Oliphant, Driver: "I love and missed racing since I stopped schools karting at 15. One of the best things about the schools karting was the atmosphere of racing competitively with a load of mates, not necessarily to win a championship (which was lucky considering Phil Ingram decided he wasn't to be beaten), but mostly to have a good story to tell at the end of every race. GRDC nailed it perfectly from this perspective so moving to GRDC+ was obvious to me instead of GT5 at this point. Being around Want2Race and everything they did last year for me was brilliant so it was a no brainer to immediately sign with them."”
Paul Oliphant, Driver: "I’m really looking forward to being back on the grid. Last year was fantastic with lots of great racing in such a friendly atmosphere. Ginetta have certainly got the formula right! Being on the same grid as Jack will add some spice but I will need to improve if I’m not going to be looking at his bumper all year!"
Ben Hyland, want2race Team Boss: "Having worked with both Paul and Jack for over a year now we are delighted to continue the relationship and watch them build on their success from 2016. Paul competed at the sharp end of GRDC+ at the latter end of last season, so we look for him to start where we left off and aim to secure consistent top 6 results. 'Fast Jack' is an exciting proposition for the team, with extraordinary car control and pace we are confident Jack will be pushing for race wins and regular visits to the podium. Tom works for W2R as our driver development and data coach so the Oliphant's are a large part of the want2race family".
The Ginetta Racing Drivers Club Plus (GRDC+) is a natural progression for those drivers who have recently discarded their 'novice' plates and are often graduates from our GRDC series, though not exclusively. This second year series gradually ups the circuit time for racing drivers. It continues to be a support series to the British GT, taking in six circuits - including an overseas round at Zandvoort - with a trio of races at each venue.
GRDC+ is also the ideal starting platform for drivers who have too much circuit racing experience for the purely entry-level Ginetta Racing Drivers Club, enabling them to retain all the member benefits, whilst racing amongst drivers of similar ability and experience.
Drivers can continue to compete in their road legal G40 Club Car, with a few minor changes. The uprated suspension and semi-slick tyres unleash the next level in performance, making the Ginetta Racing Drivers Club Plus a perfect fit for those wanting to push themselves on track whilst still seeking a collegiate feel.
You can follow the progress of Paul and Jack Oliphant on the want2race team website and social channels. The Ginetta GRDC+ Championship starts at Oulton Park on April 15th alongside the British GT Championship
