Phil Ingram is set to become the UK’s newest racing driver after securing a fully funded season in the 2016 Ginetta Racing Drivers Club thanks to Ginetta and want2race.
The 33 year old aspiring racing driver from Brackley was selected as the overall winner from 300 novice entrants, after excelling in on track assessments over the three day event at Bedford Autodrome on 26 – 28 October, dubbed as the most competitive and successful want2race event ever.
Former EasyKart racer Ingram received one-on-one tuition from some of the UK’s best racing instructors. Including Michelin Ginetta GT4 SuperCup champion Tom Oliphant, former race winner David Pittard and ITV Sport anchor, Paul O’Neil.
want2race and Ginetta selected 26 drivers to join them at Wednesday’s final (28 October). After a slow start to the day due to heavy rain delaying play as water pooled on the circuit, the aspiring racers were given two sessions to impress the judges before the group was halved.
The 12 finalists then faced a head-to-head shoot out which saw the drivers compete in pairs against each other in a five minute ‘race of champions’ style competition. After much deliberation, and as the sun set on the Bedford North circuit, Ingram was deemed as a very worthy winner.
Phil Ingram said;“I would like express my gratitude to everyone involved in want2race for such an amazing experience, and of course the final result. The opportunity to learn alongside talented instructors is second to none. From the very first time I got behind the wheel at the qualifier, to the final shootout on Wednesday I have enjoyed every second and will remember this moment forever.
“At a kart track I worked part time at when I was at Uni, I ran a race school for young kids, some of whom have ended up doing very well, so the whole concept of the want2race competition to find and nurture talent is very close to my heart. Winning want2race feels like the culmination of years of effort and I couldn't be happier. I know that there will be many challenges in my first year of Ginetta racing and I promise to give my absolute best in order for it to be a success.”
want2race boss Ben Hyland added;“To find our champion in such dramatic fashion on the final day summed up and captured the whole want2race experience perfectly. After the nail biting head-to-head shootout, we chose Phil as our talented and deserved winner - driving for Team want2race in the GRDC next season as part of his fully funded prize. A big thank you to all our entrants, partners, instructors, support team and everyone involved with want2race and Ginetta who have helped make this year's competition our greatest achievement yet.”
On top of his 2016 racing season and G40 GRDC Race Car Hire, Ingram will receive an MSA Starter Pack and Race License (ARDS Test), Ginetta Race Suit, Insurance, Crash Helmet and HANS device, iZone Training Session prior to the season start, race boots & gloves, technical support and driver coaching, race fuel and tyres.
The top three positions in the final were closely contested, with the judging panel selecting Adam Riley and Miles Rudman as the second and third placed drivers overall.
