Season Review: Team W2R in GRDC 2016

Posted on Mon 7th Nov, 2016 in: Team News

Team want2race welcomed their drivers this season across the Ginetta GRDC and GRDC+ Championships, achieving an astounding 32 podium trophies across the team for the full season.

In GRDC it was competition Winner Phil Ingram who shone through, with a full house of 8 wins from 8 and seven fastest laps to boot. Phil drove faultlessly all year, with the pack closing the gap towards the end of the season but no match for the W2R prepped winner’s car which performed in true harmony with Phil at the wheel. Phil was the perfect ambassador for want2race, with the team looking forward to achieving many more results with him.

Jack Oliphant was often one of the quickest drivers on track in GRDC, but a combination of some bad luck and pushing to the limit meant Jack did not collect the results he deserved this season. Jack did however achieve a fabulous podium finish at Rockingham where he raced wheel to wheel with Ingram for most of the race. Jack's finest hour came at Donington Park, where he came from the back of the grid in just a few laps to challenge for a podium finish once again. Alongside his brother Tom as team data and driver development instructor, Jack has great potential which team W2R are sure to unlock in coming years.

A special mention to Keith Gibson, who joined the team after seeing a feature on W2R in CAR magazine. From Northern Ireland Keith wanted to check off the racing driver ambition from his bucket list, which he did in great fashion. Keith travelled to the track often last minute, but showed great ability to learn the circuits quickly and had a top 6 finish in his last appearance on the grid at Donington Park.

Last but by no means least Barry Trumper improved throughout the year showing promise at Rockingham and Donington. Some unfortunate incidents caused Barry to retire from a couple of the races, but Barry showed Top 10 pace and determination throughout a difficult first season of Motorsport.

Once again the Ginetta GRDC provided some spectacular racing from drivers in their first year as a novice racer, with over 20 cars on the grid it was the closest and most exciting year for GRDC yet, with many drivers and their cars now progressing into the Ginetta GRDC+ Championship for 2017.
