Team want2race took part in one of the UK’s oldest motorsport events last weekend at Silverstone – the Birkett 6HR Relay – and came away as the top Ginetta team in just their first year of participating in the event.
The team of four drivers and cars, comprising of Ben Hyland (G40 Cup), Luca Hirst (G40 Cup), Mike Jarvis (GT5) and Adrian Campbell-Smith (GT5), want2race were up against 69 other teams including a guest team from the BBC’s Top Gear show.
Adrian started the race and put in a brilliant first session, running in a lot of clean air once the busy race start had settled down after a short spell under safety car conditions. Mike’s first session was difficult in traffic but managed to maintain the team’s position within the top 8 in class and put in some excellent lap times. Ben’s first session was a tale of two halves, with the first 25 minutes battling with more powerful cars who were slower overall on the lap. The second half of the session lap times came down and Ben ran in lots of clear space. Luca’s session completed the first three hours of the race in fine form for Team W2R who had moved up to 7th in class.
Some chassis adjustments for all the cars ahead of their second session and all drivers put in their personal best lap times, with Adrian fastest in GT5 and Luca G40 Cup. All four drivers put in ‘the drives of their lives’ to maintain the gap ahead of the second place Ginetta team, Fox Motorsport. Adrian and Mike drove faultlessley with the pit crew managing slick pit stops between them as they both maintained perfect race pace for their sessions. A long period under the safety car then allowed an earlier than scheduled stop between Luca and Ben in the last hour of racing – for team want2race to come home in style as the top Ginetta team and sixth place within a more powerful class of car.
With 70 teams on track at once, and over 280 cars in total capable of widely varying lap times, the team had to be consistent and vigilant on circuit when passing and being passed to ensure they were competitive for the total of 6 hours. Team manager, Ben Hyland, said; “The longer sessions really were exciting from the moment you left the pit lap, you had to be looking ahead and behind as far as possible all of the time and manage your overtakes to perfection. Really proud of all our team’s performance on and off the circuit and we look forward to moving into more endurance racing in the future.”
