Alongside Silverstone and Brands Hatch, Donington Park is one of three major circuits that has held the British F1 GP. Considered by many as the best racetrack in the UK due to corners such as Craner Curves and Redgate, Donington Park is for the serious racers.
In fact, it was the first road circuit to be built and remains the oldest in current use.
The 1993 European Grand Prix was held at Donington Park. Impacted by heavy rain, Ayrton Senna dominated throughout, winning the race by over a minute from British driver Damon Hill. Senna started on the grid in fifth place, but found himself in first by the end of the first lap, and never looked in danger of giving up his lead.
More recently, a deal was struck for Donington Park to host the British Grand Prix from 2010 onwards in a 17-year deal. Several upgrades were put into planning, including an entirely new pit lane and an increase in circuit length to just shy of three miles. The extension in length would come by way of adding a new infield loop, to align the track with modern-day F1 racing.
In light of the 2009 financial crisis, funds were not secured, and the deal fell through. As a result, Silverstone secured a contract for the next 17 years.
